Charging Your Electric Car At Home

Electric car charger

Electric and hybrid vehicles, or EVs, are becoming more common. With charging stations becoming more popular across the world, topping up has become simpler, but what about getting a full charge?

Why A Home Charging?

We don’t have time to sit at a charging station and wait for our car to start. Of course, you can charge from the mains at home, but this takes around 6-9 hours and is not recommended as a long-term solution. A specially built at-home charging station may be the solution.

A home charger point will bring you from flat to complete in 3.5 hours and is up to 2.5x quicker than a 3-pin plug setup.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge My EV?

Depending on your tariff, it would cost on average 10p per kWh, which works out to as little as 2p per mile, saving £1000 per year when compared to gasoline. Dedicated EV charging stations charge your electric vehicle at 3.7kW or 7kW, providing 15-30 miles of range per hour of charging (compared to 2.3kW from a standard plug socket which provides up to 8 miles of range per hour).

A smart metre will also allow you to keep track of your use over the week, giving you a better understanding of how much your EV costs you.
